By now, with the unemployment rate at 9.6 percent, many of us know that losing a job can be devastating. I published my award-winning book, “Fired Up” after I was blindsided by a firing in 2006 before the recession kicked in the end of 2007. The book was therapeutic for me and continues to help many others who are in crisis. It has also enlightened employers on more humane ways to let people go.

But there are times when a firing is well earned, or a person should resign. Two news stories around the Labor Day weekend make this point.

Transition to Adulthood: African American Youth and Youth from Low-Income Workin

The fact sheets examine the transition to adulthood for two groups of youth using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, 1997 cohort. Low-income African Americans are compared to low-income white youth, and youth from low-income "high-work" families are compared to low-income youth from moderate-work and nonworking (i.e., low-work) families. ATLANTA Leon Walker’s web-design business was successful long before he moved it from Indiana to Atlanta in 2006.
